Struggles & Beginning

1. The Empty Chair

The empty chair when you’re not there;

The missing touch of your warm clasp;

The life at the table that came from you;

Ah where are you Mum, where are you?

The questions when you forgot some word or prayer;

The “let it be” when things got tough;

The care we gave unstintingly-

But now the love is just not enough

I fill my days with doing more,

So I do not stop to miss you so,

But from the thoughts I cannot run,

Of caring, I just can’t let go.

I turn to you, forgetting.

Sometimes I think I try too hard,

To fill the void you’ve left behind-

With what, with what I do not know,

The fact you’re gone just slips my mind.

I know you are up there and better off,

I know the love will still be in our hearts,

But it’s little comfort when I reach

For your hand and instead touch

The arms of your empty chair.

2. Colours of Morning

Now the period of mourning is over-

The black and blue hues replaced with the bright,

But we know these are just visible signs of closure:

In a heart that struggles with the pain at its height.

Feeling your presence, your closeness, your guidance

In the sleep that remains troubled and sore

The questions, the “if only” still surfacing, reminding

Again and again of all we had and more.

Moments of loneliness as we walk in the light,

Like shadows in every painting,

Of flowers and leaves in sunshine so bright,

Light and shadows together on leaves and fields dancing.

And so, we move on knowing life is not ended,

Feeling her touch in the gentle breeze.

A part of us, yet apart till we stop groping in silence,

Till one day life, in its fullness, breaks through,

And we hear again the birds, in joy chirping,

In the patterns of love through which we move.

3. To Ireland’s Shore, I Fled

I fled to you with grief so sore,

The woe I felt deep in my heart,

The shades of green that greeted me,

To my broken soul did Hope impart!

That through this growth, though there be pain

I will one day be whole again.

The quiet murmurings of brooks and peaceful lake waters

Brought me a peace amidst the many memories

Of a love that would not cease

And so I rested for a while, just a brief respite

From eyes red with overflowing tears

To take the bitter with the sweet

For all the love I have received

Knowing, believing when it is over

And we meet again in another world,

To feel His embrace, hear His voice say

“Welcome home, my brave daughter,

How well you have proved your worth.”

4. Hope

A single plant remained

Alone in the pot

Watered faithfully each day

It stood upright

I waited to see which way it would go

And then today the tiniest of leaves appeared

Surely this is renewal

This is growth, this is life

Believe, it says, never give up

For where there’s life

There is hope – evergreen,

Growing from within

Imperceptibly but there

By the Hand of One

5. One Step At A Time

Step by step lighting up just in time

He shows me the way

Seeing turns only as they come

When all the rest of the path dark stays

Hands groping out

For Him to reach me

Then a touch on my elbow guides

Leads me over and upwards

Till I reach the topmost stile

And now I see the twists and turns

And know I could not have braved the way ahead

Except one step at a time in His hand.

So in life why do we want to know

The future days, months and years ahead

Only Trust and Faith can show us

How to overcome the twists and turns of life

Not 2 or 3, but one step at a time.

Yet oft when we read a book

Before we even reach the middle

In haste we turn the page to the back

To know the ending so as not to wait.

How soon we lose the anticipation

Of journeying step by step through the plot

And spoiling our joy by cheating a peep

Ashamed after that at our ploy.

We learn then there is joy in waiting

Surprises at every step that

In haste we miss.

Like threads only woven with patience

Which can yield a picture of such bliss.

Use me Lord each day as I listen

To wait, to come and to stop in time.

To draw strength from the breaks we take

And then move on… one step at a time.

6. Find Me Today

Find me in the God filled spaces

When things go right,

And days are long and slow.

Find me when you take the time,

To hear birds chirping and church bells chime,

In laughter and love that celebrates LIFE

Find me when your heart is light,

And smells of spices linger in the air,

When cooking in peace turns out right,

when the ingredient of love is there.

Find me in your heart at night,

In comforting thoughts of days well spent,

For I was a creature of content.

Find me in the values I taught

Of friendship, love and happiness,

In my words of “in the will of God I rest.”

Find me when you turn and say,

“It was mum who showed me the way”,

and love me and yourself and God even more.

Find me in today, my darling, as you go God’s joyful way

Look for me not in sad yesterdays,

For I am home and I live with Him – today.

7. Forgiveness

To forgive – a challenge, but in the end, after a long time

We can achieve it, as we internalise

Christ’s forgiveness on the cross,

And come to realise that it is His will for us.

Its easier to know why we need to do it,

Than to let go of our hurts and anxieties,

And yet with His help and grace, it is done.

But do we do a complete job of it?

How do we forgive ourselves

When we are the first to crucify and condemn

The one we see in the mirror.

How do we let go of our own rebuffs and regrets

As we grow to be bitter.

Move from condemning ourselves to condemn others.

That is harder yet with His repentance and grace

we can look at the mirror and see

That He is there in us, that we are loved and graced

and that if God loves us and abides in us,

We have no other choice but to thankfully accept

Both His forgiveness and ours of ourselves.

For it is only then that we can love others

with the love of Christ, given freely, to be shared freely

With a commitment and resolve

That needs daily renewal that starts with

Thankfulness at being forgiven and loved first

By this Amazing God that gives us strength l

To bring love to others, deserving or otherwise;

Who forgives us our trespasses

And asks us to forgive those who trespass against us

Including ourselves , so that we may have peace,

8. Fiat

When I feel a sense of panic

Rising from somewhere between

my stomach and my heart

So deep that I cannot breathe in or out,

I find myself crying out, like Peter did,

In waters dark as I swirl and sink.

Then a hand, bright and shining I see –

With newfound strength I reach out beyond me-

I breathe again in coming to the surface.

” Lord, save me!” I cry when upsetting fears

Come upon me in the dead of night,

Robbing my peace, overwhelming my senses

as the flood waters rise higher and higher.

” Take this cup, Lord, away from me

Before I choke on its poison.”

Then I awake, exhausted and find

Tears and in that moment of great weakness,

The Grace that only comes from you.

Was it a baptism of fire, this struggle

To teach me that you are God,

And can only save when I let go

Of earthly emotions and unnecessary concerns,

That rob me of the Trust that I must have,

To let you help me find my way,

out of this self-imposed distress-

In trying to cope with everything

Only relying on my strength and not on You,

who made the entire universe?

Then I hear a bubbling brook and Your voice quieting my breath,

Telling me to lean on You and rest my weariness,

“This ,too, shall pass,” You say

” I AM here to bear with you

Whatever pain and pressure that you are going through

Let go, my child, for truly I the Lord am here

Trust me enough to let go and let me bear your cross.

Believe all will be well.

Will you trust me enough to walk ON the water?

All I need is your…FIAT

Yes Lord, AMEN.

. “

9. Waiting

Waiting..so hard, Lord
when I am lost,
and Faith is not enough,
To overcome the confusing thoughts,
When my heart is losing to my Head
and prayers are dry deserts with no break.

How soon we forget your steadfast love!
that has been with us all this time,
That has been holding on to ALL our tears,
blocking our unfounded fears.

Overwhelmed by the moment, we lose our way,
Remind us, Lord, when we need to cling to you;
and just put ourselves to rest in your arms
In full confidence That You, Lord, will deliver
and satisfy our deepest yearnings.

Thankfulness is our umbrella,
While waiting for the rain of discouragement to stop,
to block the flood of self -recriminations,
that come in the darkest of nights,
unbidden in our dreams.
When that happens then let
us fall on our knees,
and push the doubts, the pain away,

Let the moment pass despite the rain,
Letting Him calm the storm,
in prayer and praise, knowing that God
Can do no wrong.
In His time, a window opens
and our Hope, our compass is restored>

So I will, while waiting,
believe he hears our innermost cries,
and wait, wait like a baker, with patience,
for the seed of Faith, like yeast in bread,
to rise.
For He will come to fulfill
the promises He has made,
for He knows our deepest yearnings
in the hearts that He Creates.

10. His Healing

When we cry out so desperately for healing,

When years have passed since we were first stricken,

Does God grant us what we needs and cry for

Or does He grant what He knows we need Most.

Do we need healing when we cry for sight, to walk,

To be well again, or rid of our emotional shortcomings,

Or is there an underlying need, buried and denied too long,

For forgiveness and repentance in our stubborn hearts,

to soften and open fist, so healing can start

To make us whole once more, healed from within ,

Of long forgotten unforgiveness,

Of pain inflicted on ourselves and others,

Grudges lying deep beneath layers of self deception.

Ah Lord, you make us wait till we open our inward eyes and see

How we must put You first in active trust,

Let go of crosses that have long become

A crutch for our fears , used for just too long.

A reason for us to wallow in our ills until

The Cross becomes too comfortable to leave behind

Till Jesus urges us again to do what we must,

call out to Him, get up and walk, in Him to fully Trust.

Often, He says first the words “I forgive you”

Reminding us of the hurts that cripple us,

To give us first the inner healing we need,

to make us ready for His healing touch,

embrace this joyous life that is ours to live,

the Mission that we will find strength in Him to serve

In thankfulness and Trust, Love and Faith abounding.

Believe my heart, His wait is not in vain,

He brings us first forgiveness and then…healing

For He is Lord and knows our every need,

He alone binds the wounds, within and without,

To bring us to HIs everlasting Peace!

11. Nonplussed

When tears come, but stop short of falling;
when words come but cannot be uttered;
from a throat that has run dry, in shock,
When prayers stop short,
and do not want to roll off your tongue
when you want to let go but cannot afford to,
When you want to scream but don’t have the strength-
KNOW that He is there and understands,
He knows that all you can say is “please Lord have mercy”

He is the one who holds on to you,
amid waters swirling all round you,
When speaking heart to heart in the smallest whisper
is all that counts,
and suddenly a pinpoint of light lifts your heart
Believe and hope,
Beyond all hope and beyond all understanding,
He is there to give you His peace, HIs courage, His strength-
For He is GOD, our Lord, El Hayya- The God of my life and yours.
Call on HIs name-
JESUS – the one who saves us, sometimes from ourselves,
as He knows we can be our own worst enemy.
Reach out to Him and He will do the rest.
let go and let God
and feel His caress,
as He gently lifts you into HIs arms,
Rests your head on His shoulders
and says ” Quiet, I AM HERE”
and all you need to say is
Amen, Lord, AMEN

12. In Time

Thank God that You are God,
timeless, immovable and Eternal.
Not ruled by timetables,
or nagging needs that demand
our crucial time, the Now of attention.
You stay outside time and space
Waiting till we have time for You..
A limited window of time,
Jealously guarded, then move on
with our lives that You gave to us,
until we have no more time,
and return to You.
Time lost cannot be regained.
Each year, we get older and too soon,
weaker, yet it is our choice -if we would slow down and listen to
Your voice in the silent movement of the spheres
the rustling in the trees,
the chirping of the birds,
the buzzing of the bees.
Time is not ours to hold onto
But to give away –
Hopefully, meaningfully.
to make a difference,
every moment of our day;
Not only when you “have time”.

It is ours to live with You,
Omnipotent One,
in whom all things are possible-
in God’s will, and in God’s time
Given to you to cherish, to love and to bring back to You –
Cup overflowing with thankfulness!
Time is your life from God,
thankfully to return to God, with interest!
To hear Him say, “well done, good and faithful servant!”
Be not ashamed to admit that you have
Wasted your time on earth, without knowing
Where it has gone to -this Life, this time,
That you have kept to yourself,
leaving God outside waiting,
till you ran out of time –
Not to complete your numerous tasks-
but to spend with Him till the end.
Amen
